Animal behavior :: essays research papers
The study of animal behavior is Ethology. A large part of the studies have been conducted by Lonrenz and Niko Tinbergen who wanted to find out how animals saw the world. à à à à à For example, fishes. The male will protect its territory. They will become aggressive when they see the red belly of another fish. This reaction is innate or instinctive, it is automatic. An experiment was performed by placing a large red sheet of paper in the tank. This made the male fish aggressive. This aggressiveness is what will make the male more ââ¬Å"fitâ⬠in order provide more sperm to the females. The red was the releaser/sign stimuli in this case. à à à à à If you take a chick for example, its mother will respond to sound instead of sight. When a chick is distressed and is placed in a sound proof container, the mother will not respond. However, when there is a physical barrier but not sound proof, the mother will respond to the chickââ¬â¢s cries. The releaser/sign stimulus is sound in this case. A bee will never see a white flower but instead it will see the ââ¬Å"targetââ¬â¢, which is the pollen. à à à à à Pheromones are not hormones. They are chemicals that are released outside of the animal, and have a scent that will give an effect. Therefore, pheromones can also be releaser/sign stimuli as well. à à à à à When a gull has captured a plentiful supply of fish in its neck, the baby will peck at its mother so the fish will be released for them to feed on. The baby gulls will respond to the back and forth swinging and the red dot on the motherââ¬â¢s beak. à à à à à When a releaser leads directly to behavior it is called a fix-action pattern. If an egg rolls out of a nest the mother will immediately try and recollect it. But if the egg is taken away the mother will still do it. This shows that once the switch is turned on it will continue. Fix action patterns can be learned by humans, and will soon become autonomic. à à à à à Usually hormones and timing will motivate animals and drive their behavior; timing through biological clocks, the animals circadium rhythms (approx 24hrs). This circadium rhythm may be altered by changing the animalââ¬â¢s environment. If a squirrel is put into the dark and exposed to artificial light, its cycle may shift. Each cell has a biological clock, which means each organ as well as the individual animal has one.

The Use of Metaphors, Repetition of Words and Biblical References in Obamaââ¬â¢s Speech of Inauguration Based on ââ¬ÅAnalyzing Political Discoursesââ¬Â Theory and Practice by Paul Chilton
The use of metaphors, repetition of words and biblical references in Obamaââ¬â¢s speech of inauguration based on ââ¬Å"Analyzing Political Discoursesâ⬠Theory and Practice by Paul Chilton Number of Words: 2589 Introduction: Political discourses are made to impress, persuade and to underline ideas to change a country. Politicians use specialized writers to write for them their discourses or use a lot of time to write one, as political discourses are important for the future outcome. For example: To be voted by the people or explain bad situation on an adequate way so that the people donââ¬â¢t offended. To achieve this goal, several methods are used. But in this essay I will focus on metaphors, the repetition of specified words and the use of Biblical references, using methods given by Paul Chilton in his book ââ¬Å"Analyzing Political Discourse, Theory and Practiceâ⬠. As experimental territory I used the inaugural speech of Barrack Obama, which he used for his first c andidature to become the president of the United States of America. The Speech by Barrack Obama can be found in the Appendix. My goal is not only to see what and how he used the methods but also what goal he tried to achieve. It is important to have some background information and what the people thought of him. As for America and other parts in the world, Obama stands for a new ideology, he promises America better healthcare, the end of the War and solutions to many problems, always emphasizing that this goal can only achieved as a team/nation but does he succeed to give us this image? What tricks did he use? What is a metaphor? Metaphors are used in political discourses to replace words that the audience doesnââ¬â¢t want to hear or could react badly. But what is a metaphor? In literary use, a metaphor (from the Greek: metapherin rhetorical trope)[1] is defined as an indirect comparison between two or more subjects that are typically linked by a ââ¬Å"is aâ⬠to join the two subjects. As an example we can take following sentence: â⬠This Man is a beast ââ¬Å". This is an elliptical form to emphasize the sentence that the Man is like a beast. Paul Chilton is the opinion that, Metaphors, qua models of political realities, as he calls them, are part of political discourses of today and used as vehicles to bring an opinion to a target. [2] We realize now that all of us speak in metaphors whether we realize it or not.For example Mark Johnson, a philosopher, suggests that metaphors not only make our thoughts more vivid and interesting but that they actually structure and individualize our perceptions and understanding such that each person has a different understanding and thoughts about a common subject. [3] Metaphor is for many people a device of poetic and rhetorical imagination and development rather than the ordinary language, which is wrong as proven above. Metaphor analysis in Barrack Obamaââ¬â¢s Speech: In the following points I will reveal s everal metaphors Obama used and will try to reveal why he used them. But also the Biblical references used as a metaphor, or as a bridge to transfer his Ideas. 1. CHANGE IS A MOVEMENT Citation out of the Speech: 1) ââ¬Å"Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. ââ¬Å" 2) ââ¬Å"The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works ââ¬â whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. â⬠In the first citation ââ¬Å"rising tidesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"still watersâ⬠are used as source domains, whereas the target domain is the word ââ¬Å"prosperityâ⬠and ââ¬Å"peaceâ⬠. As it can be seen in the phrases: ââ¬Å"rising tides of prosperityâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the still waters of peaceâ⬠here, the movement is a change of location (rising) or a stationary moment (still). If it involves a movement as change of location, it can be associated with the words: forward, backward, upward, downward, etcâ⬠¦ so different directions and movements. The ââ¬Å"rising tide of prosperityâ⬠can be seen as a state of prosperity that has moved and is changing, while peace has still not changed. This movement of which Obama is talking about can also be seen as a: flow of natural force (ââ¬Å"the rising tidesâ⬠) and substance (ââ¬Å"still watersâ⬠). In the metaphorical expression in citation 2) the part which acts as source is the phrase ââ¬Å"We intend to move forwardâ⬠and ââ¬Å"programs will endâ⬠where Obama is talking about the ideas of the US-government to provide jobs and a better social warranty. [4] In both metaphorical expressions, I think Obama wants to tell us that all presidents of America had taken the presidenti al oath to develop America. All of their effort had the aim of raising economic development and prosperity and that all of these can only be achieved as a nation with a strong political support from the people. So, the ââ¬Å"WEâ⬠as a nation, which he uses a lot in his speeches. 2. POLITIC IS A JOURNEY 1) This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. 2) Our journey has never been one of short cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted ââ¬â for those who prefer leisure to work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame.Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things ââ¬â some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, which have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom. In the metaphorical expression of the first citation the part which acts as a source domain is the phrase: ââ¬Å"This is the journey we continue todayâ ⬠whereas the focus of the citation is the American Political life. By saying the sentence ââ¬Å"This is the journey we continue todayâ⬠gave me the impression that the American people are compared to travelers having a journey to a certain destination.Even though we know that politics is no journey as such but can be seen as such in a metaphorical way. In the metaphorical expression of the second citation the part that interacts as source is the phrase ââ¬Å"Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-heartedâ⬠whereas the target is also the American political life, like in the first citation with another connotation but keeping the idea of a journey in mind. We can see that in both citations have the same idea of a journey which is given to the audience. The idea behind is that the audiences who are involved in political life are like travelers on a journey, with their common need in life seen as the goal of this journey. The political activities and relation is their vehicle used to reach the goal of common interest. [5] 3. BIBLICAL REFERANCES AS A LIFESTYLE The citations I used here are taken again in a separate chapter using the theoretical rapprochement given by Paul Chilton in part III chapter 10. 1)ââ¬Å"We remain a young nation, but, in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. â⬠2) ââ¬Å"Love is patient, love is kind.It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails. â⬠In the 1st citation the source domain given is the phrase ââ¬Å"time has come to set aside childish thingsâ⬠where he targets the lifestyle of the Americans. It gives the impression that the fights they had about poli tical problems are childish and that they should focus to strive a common goal.In the second citation he uses the same idea, again using a citation out of a religious text using as source domain ââ¬Å"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seekingâ⬠like before the target is the lifestyle of the Americans which Obama criticizes. It is clear that through these citations Obama tries to reason the population quoting biblical references. Comparing America with childhood and telling them that through love only, again the idea of working together, all goals can be achieved.I wont go deeper into this comparison as I will come back to it later on in the text. Frequency of words: To see what words Obama used in his speech frequently and how many times we had to know how many words are in his whole speech, which lies around 2403 words. As such I was able to give the percentage of the most used words. The word O bama laid the most emphasizes is ââ¬Å"WEâ⬠which he used 62 times, which can be understood as his speech is about working together as a nation and is also a word used in his slogan: ââ¬Å"Yes WE canâ⬠. Other words he used frequently are:[6] KeywordRepeatsDensity Nation 12 0,50 New 11 0,46America 9 0,37 Today 7 0,29 People 7 0,29 The repetition of these words sticks with the listeners as such the listener will always remember this words and will combine them with the discourse of Obama. As for mind manipulation it is the repetition that stays in our mind. [7]When we are learning or looking at advertisements or when we are learning a song, we always repeat them until we know them by heart. In the case of marketing the advertisements are kept easy and shown more than one so that they stick in our minds and when we have to choose between two product we will chose the one we ââ¬Å"knowâ⬠or that we can remember of.The same is in political discourses. The more often it is repeated the more we will remember them and believe them. In Obamaââ¬â¢s case using the words Nation, New etcâ⬠¦ he tries to underline the idea of freshness in the United States and that it can only work as a NATION. As all presidents the repetition of AMERICA, motivates the American listeners and they feel directly talked to, strengthening also the bond between the people and the nation. Paul Chilton underlines in his book that discourses often use a container concept, which is created by the words used. This container ideology is divided in three structures: in interior and a exterior which are defined by a boundary which are formed in political discourses to a container- nation with political borders given by the speech. As such it is able for politicians to give the fault to others, outside of the container while securing the interior of the container. Analysis of Biblical references Apparently it is customary in American political discourse to employ biblical language[ 8], which is an inherent part of the old American public way of speaking. However, given that Obama is a non-traditional and liberal candidate for president,[9] it is even more interesting to analyze the biblical references he used and give possible explanations why used following citations for his speech. ââ¬Å"We remain a young nation, but, in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. â⬠Obama quoted here, the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 13:11, dealing with St. Paulââ¬â¢s letter to the church in Corinth. The goal he tried to achieve of this particular example is to also aims at the Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and non-believing Americans, to include them too into the speech, for it is a text that is usually read at wedding ceremonies and is not specified to one religion specifically, as it speaks about true love in the following manner: ââ¬Å"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is n ot self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes an always perseveres.Love never fails. â⬠(1 Corinthians, 13:4) ââ¬Å"When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. â⬠(1 Corinthians, 13:11) These Letters were written by St. Paul to the church in Corinth in the times of internal struggles and divisions in the church, and when the church was hreatened by immoral influences surrounding the community. St. Paulââ¬â¢s letter was a letter of criticism and implorement to the Corinthians to stop the arguing and fighting around different problems and embrace, what he called, the most important virtue: love. [10] The choice of this particular biblical reference could be perceived as Obamaââ¬â¢s attempt to spread the ideology of love ââ¬Å"loving thy neighborâ⬠so that the American people can embrace a notion of racial inclusiveness and ideological diversity, necessary in the time of economic and international crises.Again we can find the idea of a ââ¬Å"WEâ⬠. Conclusion: It is now obvious that Paul Chilton theory can be applied. We can see that it is the play together of the different methods and many more make a discourse unique and manipulative. But it is important to know in which context the discourse has been written as the context can change the words, emotions and message in a political discourse. In Obamaââ¬â¢s speech we can find the concept of pragmatism, liberalism, inclusiveness, acceptance of religious and ethnic diversity and unity. As such the result of keywords of hi s run for presidency. This is shown by the prominent words employed by Obama: nation, new and America, and a overall dominance of the personal pronoun We understood as necessary in the time of national perilâ⬠¦ The results of the biblical references, which Paul Chilton explains as ââ¬Å"onlyâ⬠way to motivate and capture Americaââ¬â¢s population, have shown that Obamaââ¬â¢s choice of citations (quoting the Corinthians) was to strengthen the notion of unity and brotherly love among the various members of the American diverse society. As such we can see that his methods were well used and can be found by the methods of Paul Chilton.Obama stands for his candidature through his speech and ideology, world wide as a new wind for America that will rebuild and strengthen the country. And we have to remember that Obama is the first president that has been accepted as young and black person as president. Impulse â⬠Goddess Body Fragrance Advertisement Essay
The advertisement that I have chosen is the ââ¬ËImpulseââ¬â¢ anti-perspirant spray advertisement that was in Glamour magazine, which has an audience of stylish young women. The advert is targeted at the women who would read a magazine like Glamour because it is a womenââ¬â¢s fragrance and because the picture at the centre is of a young beautiful woman. It is based on the same idea as the television advertisement for this product that was on at the same. The television advertisement is about a woman who keeps her spray in her handbag. When she opens her bag to use her deodorant, a tribe of little people who live in her bag look up out of her bag at her. They had been living around the aerosol can as if it was a totem pole and they believed that the woman who some times looked down on them from above was a goddess looking down from the heavens. The advertisement that I have chosen shows the scene from the television advertisement where she looks down into her bag and is worshiped by the tribe. The image of the woman and the product are at the centre of the advertisement. It was done in this way so it would grasp the attention of the reader, as the images are the most important parts. The image and text are mainly coloured in shades of gold, which is a colour that suggests wealth and holiness. This emphasises the theme of worship and godliness that is depicted in the advertisement. The advertisement relies on the slogan and image at the centre to get the attention of the reader and to get the right effect. The image is of a pretty young woman with light shining around her to suggest that she is holy and that she is looking down from heaven. The people of the tribe are looking up at her and praising her with their hands raised high. This shows that she is highly respected. Also the tribe are beneath her, which suggests that she is powerful. These are the qualities that reader of the advertisement aspires to when they see it in the magazine. On closer inspection of the picture it can be seen that everyone in the tribe is male. Because it is a tribe of men that is worshipping her, the advertisement is suggesting to the reader that the product will make the user more attractive to men. The advertisement gives a compliment to women in the slogan. ââ¬Å"Summon your inner goddess,â⬠suggests that the reader has an inner beautiful and powerful element that is attractive to other people. The slogan is in large capital letters and is bright and bold. This is because it needs to be highly visible as it is an important part of the advertisement. The rest of the writing, apart from the product name, is very small because it is important to capture the readerââ¬â¢s attention first to gain a larger audience for the advertisement. The details can be described later after people have become interested. There are few words on this advertisement as it relies mainly on the image and slogan to get its point over to the reader. This makes the image more striking and so more likely to catch the readerââ¬â¢s attention. The lack of words can be good because people generally do not want to read too many words. If there were more words the readerââ¬â¢s attention may be lost or the words may distract the attention from the image. Instead of identifying the product as just an anti-perspirant, it is called a body fragrance as well. This is a pleasant way of describing the product and gives the impression of a sweet smell and this is appealing to the reader. Overall the advertisement suggests to the reader that the user of this product will become like a goddess. This means they will be more confident, powerful and attractive. These attributes are very appealing to the target audience for this advertisement. It gives the impression of worship and adoration towards the woman in the picture and this is the type of respect the reader may aspire to.
The Topic Of Global Warming Environmental Sciences Essay
In recent treatments on the subject of Global Warming, a controversial issue has been whether the facts support this as a existent issue and that the universes temperature is in fact warming or one of this being a myth and the planets overall temperatures are non raising any more or less than in any other clip in history. On the one manus, some argue that forms of clime alteration have ever existed in history and that does non demo that the planet is warming at all. From this position, many factors can consequence climate alteration and the planet has a rhythm of warming and chilling that has continued throughout history. On the other manus, others argue that the usage of fossil fuels such as ( oil, gas, and coal ) have created extra Co2 in the ambiance making a nursery consequence that has helped to raise temperatures of the planet well. In the words of most reputable scientists, and one of this position ââ¬Ës chief advocates, ââ¬Å" Al Gore â⬠writer of the inconvenient tr uth, provinces planetary heating is so a serious issue in our universe and is non merely a myth ( Gore ) . Harmonizing to this position, clime alteration is an excepted fact and the planet is so warming as a consequence of human existences firing fossil fuels ( Gore ) . In amount, so, the existent issue is whether planetary heating is existent or a myth. Most scientists agree that this is non problematic and see it as more of fact. The difference of planetary heating can be narrowed farther into two parallel arguments. One is scientific, which focuses on the analyses of complex informations that is difficult for the ballad individual to understand and the other political side which is turn toing what the proper response authoritiess should take to a conjectural hazard. To add to this complex issue, big energy companies are buttonholing against planetary heating in an attempt to pull strings the truth, doing even more gray countries and projecting uncertainty on its veracity. Each side of the argument provides abundant scientific grounds that attempts to turn out at that place point. Advocates of an instantaneous and across-the-board regulative response insist that the scientific argument has long been settled. Some scientific incredulity can be good for scientists to dispute themselves to better the apprehension of the scientific discipline behind planetary heating. Therefore far this is non what materializes with clime alteration denial. Disbelievers dynamically censure any grounds that supports the issue that human existences are the chief cause of planetary heating and yet embrace any statement, article, survey, or web log that proposes confuting planetary heating or the affects persons are partaking on planetary heating. The deniers and sceptics have used similar fallacious strategies that they have used for old ages. They continue to assail the courier, suggesting that a worldwide secret plan of functionaries and environmental scientists are seeking to safeguard their support utilizing a nonreversible portraiture of the IPCC procedure. Their efforts are to foreground any specific downgrade in the anticipations and raise that out of context to propose a less desperate overall image. Pr ojecting a bastioned uncertainty and confusion, following the theoretical account of the ââ¬Å" experts â⬠employed for old ages by the baccy industry to expose the effects of smoking direct relation to malignant neoplastic disease. This is why Global Heating still has many contentions environing the subject that draw attending off from the existent issue. Global heating still has many contentions environing the subject that draw attending off from the existent issue. One illustration would be the resent ââ¬Å" Climatgate â⬠dirt where scientists were accused of pull stringsing and possible destroying informations on clime alteration. Harmonizing to an anon. hacker with the anonym ââ¬Å" FOIA â⬠hacked into email histories garnering over 1000 personal electronic mails. The hacker so leaked little inside informations of the electronic mails in a manner that at foremost looked like two head research workers had manipulated or omitted parts of the informations in order to show their findings. ( ? ) They subsequently found the research workers did nil wrong in the research or no grounds was found of disgusting drama or use. This shows the on-going battle at what lengths the persons are willing to travel to expose the research. Many treatments still continue on the subject of Global Warming with both sides taking a base on wheth er the facts support this as a existent issue and the universe ââ¬Ës temperature is in fact warming or one of this being a myth and the planets overall temperatures are non raising any more or less than in any other clip in history. Harmonizing to the latest study by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC ) , the merchandise of 100s of taking scientists from around the Earth, confirms that planetary heating is go oning now and needs to be addressed quickly to besiege expensive and ambitious complications ( IPCC ) . Many see human caused planetary heating to be a fairy tale, and they are looking for justification for the alteration in conditions forms and utmost temperature fluctuation. One statement consists of those who consider that clime fluctuation is a normal procedure in the conditions forms of the Earth, and the other consist of persons that believe it is human existences are the direct cause of clime alteration. They believe that this is caused human existences usage of fossil fuels and other gases that are released into the ambiance making a nursery consequence. NASA claims in an article released by the Dept. of Commerce, that solar intensifications do non hold the capacity to do the additions in planetary temperature and that nursery gasses are so playing a dominant function for clime alteration ( article ) . As the US Governments foremost planetary scientific establishment, NASA ââ¬Ës sentiment is extremely accepted by the community. The Dept. of Commerce explains in the same article, that a little sum of planetary heating can be attributed to the Sun about one one-fourth of planetary heating. ( citation ) That per centum is the ordinary portion of planetary heating and the remainder is from homo ââ¬Ës actions. Worlds are the taking cause behind the increased planetary warming tendency seen in the twentieth century. Natural factors like volcanic eruptions and fluctuations in the Sun, which remained dominant influences on temperatures in past centuries, can account for merely 25 per centum of planetary heating. The balance of the planets warming is caused by homo ââ¬Ës actions, preponderantly increasing degrees of Co2 and extra nursery gases. Harmonizing to writer, Thomas J. Crowley a Texas A & A ; M geologist ââ¬Å" natural variableness â⬠plays merely a subordinate function in the twentieth century heating and that the most penurious account for most of the heating is that it is due to the anthropogenetic addition in nursery gases ( Crowley ) . Crowley proposes the most direct nexus to day of the month between people and the addition in mean planets temperatures over the last century is due to something called the nursery consequence. The nursery consequence is a development where by heat from the Earth ââ¬Ës surface is absorbed by gases trapped in the ambiance. A part of heat or ( thermic radiation ) is so reflected back towards the surface and the lower ambiance. Resulting in a rise of the normal surface temperature above what it would be in the absence of the extra atmospheric gases. Addition in upwind phenomena is another consequence of planetary heating. One theory is that an addition in the planets mean temperature may be adding to stronger hurricanes in the Atlantic over the past 30 old ages. FSU geographics Professor James B. Elsner, University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor James P. Kossin and FSU postdoctoral research worker Thomas H. Jagger have used planetary orbiter informations to happen that the strongest tropical cyclones are, in fact, acquiring deriving strength and ocean temperatures are playing a impulsive function in this tendency. This information is consistent with the ââ¬Å" heat-engine â⬠theory of cyclone strength which is all a consequence of the heating of our planet. Drought As planetary heating increases it will modify legion climes of the universe. Equally far as rainfall is concerned, it will lift equatorially in both polar and sub-polar parts, and lessening in semitropical countries. This alteration in precipitation form will bring forth a drouth in certain countries, while inundations in other countr ies. Warming of the ambiance will intensify the temperature in the planets saltwaters, which will digest continued elevated temperatures for centuries to come. Raised sea H2O temperatures will take to more frequent natural catastrophes like hurricanes with and increase strength. Overall, the planet will see risky conditions conditions, such as implosion therapy, drouths, hot and cold moving ridges, and unsafe conditions conditions like typhoons and tornados. Harmonizing to the Intergovernmental Panel on ( IPCC ) , an addition in planetary temperature by 1.5 to 2.5 grades will do 20 to 30 per centum of species vulnerable to extinction, while a rise of about 3.5 grades will do 40 to 70 per centum species vulnerable to extinction. Climate alteration will ensue in loss of home ground for many carnal species like polar bears, tropical toads and coral reefs merely to advert a few. More significantly, any change in the planets weather could absolutely alter the migration forms of many different types of animate beings. An addition in the universe ââ¬Ës temperature will hinder the munificent biodiversity of unmeasurable ecosystems and could ensue in many species going nonextant. Unstable forms of rainfall will impact animate beings and worlds every bit. For worlds, planetary heating will impact our nutrient and H2O supply every bit good as our good health. Changes in the Earth ââ¬Ës rainfall will straiten many fundamental necessities such as hydro power workss, and agribusiness. Rise in the temperature of the planets Waterss will impede many piscaries that are already at a unstable point. The unexpected change in clime forms will hold a harmful consequence on the human organic structure which wo n't be able to digest the dangerous environments, a suggestion of which can be seen in method of frequent heat and cold moving ridges. Rush in natural calamities such as storms, will take to significant human casualties. Catching unwellnesss will lift to a noticeable grade as infection conveying insects will accommodate more rapidly to extreme conditions transporting with them many diseases. As a consequence frequent drouths and inundations could besides hold an consequence on human existences with nutrient deficits and many people could decease of undernourishment with a lessening in nutrient production. The of all time increasing emphasis it will hold on our system will make less assistance for those that rely on our kindne ss to feed themselves. The United States is a taking beginning of nursery emanations and reflecting cause of planetary heating. Harmonizing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate alteration ( IPCC ) , estimations are that it will take $ 1.375 trillion per twelvemonth to maintain the effects of clime alteration at a sustainable degree maintaining the planetary temperature addition to less than two grades Celsius ( 3.6 Degrees Fahrenheit ) . Having a well-coordinated revenue enhancement on carbon dioxide emanations will profit the universe as a whole and aid to prolong states by leting them to buy revenue enhancement credits from developing states which they can so utilize for an advanced and more sustainable hereafter. A C revenue enhancement is a wage as you go plan with C credits and being traded in an unfastened market for current defilers to hold clip to revise for a sustainable energy beginning. Trade caps would ask for civil war between the utmost groups of fouling states and those that are more en vironmentally witting. Monitoring of big pollution beginnings is already in topographic point with a orbiter and cheques in surveillance and financial and economic policies. By taxing a comparatively little figure of big beginnings we can travel frontward to a cleaner more sustainable Earth. Possibly add something on Sustainable Biofuels find options to fossil fuels and Carbon sinks to cut down the effects of Co2 emanations from firing C based fuel. To sum up the most important scientific findings of the predating few old ages, scientists have added extensively to the huge organic structure of grounds that demonstrates heat-trapping gases such as C dioxide that are fashioned chiefly from the combustion of fossil fuels are most surely altering the planetary clime, lifting temperatures and unsettling environments around the Earth. My ain position is that Global heating does be and that worlds have caused this addition due to the usage of fossil fuels making a nursery consequence. Thou gh I concede that specific fluctuations of clime alteration can be on a rhythm of the Earth ââ¬Ës history, I still maintain that recent addition in clime alterations are caused by an extra Co2 emanation. For illustration, the combustion of ( oil, gas, and coal ) is doing Co2 to construct up in the ambiance making a nursery affect pin downing gases that would non usually be at that place. This is lifting the overall temperature of the Earth and we are diffident of the negative side effects this may be doing for the hereafter. Although some might object that the Earth ââ¬Ës clime has a history of rhythms and with no clear informations as to what consequence it will hold on homo ââ¬Ës lives, I would answer that more research is needed and that we need to get down looking for advanced ways to lesson our usage of fossil fuels and expression for renewable sustainable energy beginnings with less emanations. The issue is of import because we all merely have one planet and waiting u ntil it is to late would non truly be a feasible option. I will stop to cite the great Norse dramatist Henrik Ibsen, wrote, ââ¬Å" One of these yearss, the younger coevals will come knocking at my door. â⬠( qtd in Gore )

Britannia Biscuit Research Paper Essay
Britannia -the ââ¬Ëbiscuitââ¬â¢ leader with a history-has withstood the tests of time. Part of the reason for its success has been its ability to resonate with the changes in consumer needs-needs that have varied significantly across its 100+ year epoch. With consumer democracy reaching new levels, the one common thread to emerge in recent times has been the shift in lifestyles and a corresponding awareness of health. People are increasingly becoming conscious of dietary care and its correlation to wellness and matching the new pace to their lives with improved nutritional and dietary habits. This new awareness has seen consumers seeking foods that complement their lifestyles while offering convenience, variety and economy, over and above health and nutrition. Britannia saw the writing on the wall. Its ââ¬Å"Swasth Khao Tan Man Jagaoâ⬠(Eat Healthy, Think Better) re-position directly addressed this new trend by promising the new generation a healthy and nutritious alternative ââ¬â that was also delightful and tasty. Thus, the new logo was born, encapsulating the core essence of Britannia ââ¬â healthy, nutritious, and optimistic and combining it with a delightful product range to offer variety and choice to consumers. INTRODUCTION TO THE INDUSTRY BISCUIT INDUSTRY IN INDIA ââ¬â AN OVERVIEW âž ¢ Biscuit industry in India in the organized sector produces around 60% of the total production, the balance 40% being contributed by the unorganized bakeries. The industry consists of two large scale manufacturers, around 50 medium scale brands and small scale units ranging up to 2500 units in the country, as at 2000-01. The unorganized sector is estimated to have approximately 30,000 small & tiny bakeries across the country. âž ¢ The annual turnover of the organized sector of the biscuit manufacturers (as at 2001-02) is Rs. 4,350 crores. âž ¢ In terms of volume biscuit production by the organized segment in 2001-02 is estimated at 1.30 million tonnes. The major Brands of biscuits are ââ¬â Britannia, Parle Bakeman, Priya Gold,Elite,Cremica, Dukes, Anupam, Horlicks, Craze, Nezone, besides various regional/State brands. âž ¢ Biscuit industry which was till then reserved in the SSI Sector, was unreserved in 1997-98, in accordance with the Govt. Policy, based on the recommendations of the Abid Hussain Committee. âž ¢ The annual production of biscuit in the organized sector, continues to be predominantly in the small and medium sale sector before and after de-reservation. The annual production was around 7.4 Lakh tonnes in 1997-98 in the next five years, biscuit production witnessed an annual growth of 10% to 12%, up to 1999-00. âž ¢ The annual Growth showed a decline of 3.5% in 2000-01, mainly due to 100% hike in Central Excise Duty (from 9% to 16%). Production in the year 2001-02 increased very marginally by 2.75% where in 2002-03 the growth is around 3%. âž ¢ The Union Budget for 2003-04 granted 50% reduction in the rate of Excise Duty on Biscuit i.e. from 16% to 8%. The Federationââ¬â¢s estimate for the current year indicates a growth of approximately 8% to 9%. âž ¢ However the average utilization of installed capacity by biscuit manufacturers in the country has been a dismal 60% over the last decade up to 2001-02. âž ¢ Though dereservation resulted in a few MNCs, i.e. Sara Lee, Kellogs SmithKline Beecham, Heinz etc entering the biscuit industry in India, most of them, with the exception of SmithKline Beecham (Horlicks Biscuits), have ceased production in the country. âž ¢ On the other hand, import of biscuits, especially in the high price segment has started from 1998-99, but however, the quantum of imports has not so far increased alarmingly and has remained at around 3.75% of the consumption of biscuits in the country in the year 2001-02. However, recent imports from china industries cheaper verities of biscuit, needs to be examined with cautions, especially in the context of the price as the low margin based domestic industry, which is operating at 60 % of the total installed capital. Exports of biscuits from India have been to the extent of 5.5% of the total production. Exports are expected to grow only in the year 2003-04 and beyond. âž ¢ Biscuit is a hygienically packaged nutritious snack food available at very competitive prices, volumes and different tastes. According to the NCAER Study, biscuit is predominantly consumed by people from the lower strata of society, particularly children in both rural and urban areas with an average monthly income of Rs. 750.00. âž ¢ Biscuit can he broadly categorized into the following segments: (Based on productions of 2000-01) Glucose 44% Marie 13% Cream 10% Crackers 13% Milk 12% Others 8%. âž ¢ . FBMI ( Federation of Biscuit Manufacturerââ¬â¢s of India ) is an association of all the biscuit manufacturers of India. Major players include Britannia, Parle, ITC, Priyagold, Windsor etc. âž ¢ In recognition of industryââ¬â¢s obligations towards the community, being a part of it, biscuit manufacturers supply biscuits to the social welfare agencies in all States for the benefit of school children, senior citizens and other needy sections of the society. FBMI ( Federation of Biscuit Manufacturerââ¬â¢s of India ) Members have always responded positively to our appeal as also by the Government, to rush truck loads of biscuits to the people affected by earthquakes, floods, famine etc. These members have also participated in supplying biscuits to the people of war ravaged Afghanistan and presently to the Iraqi people, under the aegis of the UN. âž ¢ As regards the consumption pattern is concerned. surveys and estimates by industry from time to time indicate the avera ge consumption scenario in the four Zones have been more or less close to each other, as below: 1. Northern States: 28% 2. Southern States: 24% 3. Western States: 25% 4. Eastern States: 23% [pic] âž ¢ Though India is considered as the third largest producer of Biscuits after USA and China, the per capita consumption of biscuits in our country is only 2.1 Kg., compared to more than 10 kg in the USA, UK and West European countries and above 4.25 kg in south cast Asian countries, Le. Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia etc. China has a per capita consumption of 1.90 kg, while in the case of Japan it is estimated at 7.5 kg. âž ¢ In view of the meager per capita consumption even as penetration of biscuits manufactured by the organised sector, into rural areas in India, has been very good during the last 10 years, as also in the metro and other cities, small towns etc. However, in spite of this, the industry has not been able to utilize about half of their installed capacities. âž ¢ Biscuit is a comparatively low margin food product in the PMCG (Packaged Mass Consumption Goods) sector. The commodity is also price sensitive, as a consequence of which, even when the Excise Duty was doubled on biscuits in 2000-01 biscuit manufacturers, including the major brands, were not able hike MRPs to the extend of the steep increase in the Duty. Taxation, both Central Excise Duty as also State Sales Tax, other miscellaneous levies i.e. turnover tax, local area tax, mandi taxes, purchase tax, Octroi etc., has been a major deterrent in the growth of the biscuit industry. The CII Study Report has identified Biscuit as one of the products that should treated as ââ¬Å"Merit Good for the purpose of liberal tax policy both by the Centre and States. âž ¢ Besides lack of technology upgradation in manufacturing, packaging etc has also been a factor affecting our industry, along with inadequate financial credit and support particularly for the medium and small scale biscuit un its. âž ¢ On the other hand, the Government of India has identified food processing industries as a priority area to be encouraged for growth and development and created the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (which was till then a Dept in the Ministry of Agriculture), headed by an Ministry of State with Independent charge. âž ¢ Biscuit manufacturing as well as other bakery products like Bread etc are agro based industries, with the major inputs ââ¬â wheat flour/atta sugar, milk vanaspati/vegetable oil etc all being agriculture produces. âž ¢ Industries such as Biscuit are also languishing as they are not able to achieve their potentials for higher production, in the absence of the concrete food Processing Industry Policy. FBMI in close coordination with other organizations and apex Chambers, initiated to urge the Govt of India to formulate a comprehensive Policy Document, for smooth growth and harmonious development of the industry. The Food Processing Industry Policy, which has been evolved as a result of various workshops, deliberations and representations by a large cross section of food processing industries, is yet to be finalized. It is hoped that the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, GOI would initiate action for implementation of the Policy expeditiously. âž ¢ According to the production figures of members available upto the calendar year 2003, the total production was 625000 tonnes as against 475000 tonnes in the previous year. The production of biscuit for the last 11 years is as under: âž ¢ 1993 ââ¬â 167750 1994 ââ¬â 180526 1995 ââ¬â 202567 1996 ââ¬â 222371 1997 ââ¬â 362000 1998 ââ¬â 400000 1999 ââ¬â 425000 2000 ââ¬â 450000 2001 ââ¬â 465000 2002 ââ¬â 475000 2003 ââ¬â 625000 Note: the production of members of FBMI consist of 50% (approx.) of the total production of biscuit in the organized sector. INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPANY HISTORY The story of one of Indiaââ¬â¢s favourite brands reads almost like a fairy tale. Once upon a time, in 1892 to be precise, a biscuit company was started in a nondescript house in Calcutta (now Kolkata) with an initial investment of Rs. 295. The company we all know as Britannia today. The beginnings might have been humble-the dreams were anything but. By 1910, with the advent of electricity, Britannia mechanized its operations, and in 1921, it became the first company east of the Suez Canal to use imported gas ovens. Britanniaââ¬â¢s business was flourishing. But, more importantly, Britannia was acquiring a reputation for quality and value. As a result, during the tragic World War II, the Government reposed its trust in Britannia by contracting it to supply large quantities of ââ¬Å"service biscuitsâ⬠to the armed forces. As time moved on, the biscuit market continued to growâ⬠¦ and Britannia grew along with it. In 1975, the Britannia Biscuit Company took over the distribution of biscuits from Parryââ¬â¢s who till now distributed Britannia biscuits in India. In the subsequent public issue of 1978, Indian shareholding crossed 60%, firmly establishing the Indianness of the firm. The following year, Britannia Biscuit Company was re-christened Britannia Industries Limited (BIL). Four years later in 1983, it crossed the Rs. 100 crores revenue mark. On the operations front, the company was making equally dynamic strides. In 1992, it celebrated its Platinum Jubilee. In 1997, the company unveiled its new corporate identity ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Eat Healthy, Think Betterâ⬠ââ¬â and made its first foray into the dairy products market. In 1999, the ââ¬Å"Britannia Khao, World Cup Jaoâ⬠promotion further fortified the affinity consumers had with ââ¬ËBrand Britanniaââ¬â¢. Britannia strode into the 21st Century as one of Indiaââ¬â¢s biggest brands and the pre-eminent food brand of the country. It was equally recognised for its innovative approach to products and marketing: the Lagaan Match was voted Indiaââ¬â¢s most successful promotional activity of the year 2001 while the delicious Britannia 50-50 Maska-Chaska became Indiaââ¬â¢s most successful product launch. In 2002, Britanniaââ¬â¢s New Business Division formed a joint venture with Fonterra, the worldââ¬â¢s second largest Dairy Company, and Britannia New Zealand Foods Pvt. Ltd. was born. In recognition of its vision and accelerating graph, Forbes Global rated Britannia ââ¬ËOne amongst the Top 200 Small Companies of the Worldââ¬â¢, and The Economic Times pegged Britannia Indiaââ¬â¢s 2nd Most Trusted Brand. Today, more than a century after those tentative first steps, Britanniaââ¬â¢s fairy tale is not only going strong but blazing new standards, and that miniscule initial Investment has grown by leaps and bounds to crores of rupees in wealth for Britanniaââ¬â¢s shareholders. The companyââ¬â¢s offerings are spread across the spectrum with products ranging from the healthy and economical Tiger biscuits to the more lifestyle-oriented Milkman Cheese. Having succeeded in garnering the trust of almost one-third of Indiaââ¬â¢s one billion populations and a strong management at the helm means Britannia will continue to dream big on its path of innovation and quality. And millions of consumers will savour the results, happily ever after. HISTORY OF BISCUITS Sweet or salty. Soft or crunchy. Simple or exotic. Everybody loves munching on biscuits, but do they know how biscuits began? The history of biscuits can be traced back to a recipe created by the Roman chef Apicius, in which ââ¬Å"a thick paste of fine wheat flour was boiled and spread out on a plate. When it had dried and hardened it was cut up and then fried until crisp, then served with honey and pepper.â⬠The word ââ¬ËBiscuitââ¬â¢ is derived from the Latin words ââ¬ËBisââ¬â¢ (meaning ââ¬Ëtwiceââ¬â¢) and ââ¬ËCoctusââ¬â¢ (meaning cooked or baked). The word ââ¬ËBiscottiââ¬â¢ is also the generic term for cookies in Italian. Back then, biscuits were unleavened, hard and thin wafers which, because of their low water content, were ideal food to store. As people started to explore the globe, biscuits became the ideal traveling food since they stayed fresh for long periods. The seafaring age, thus, witnessed the boom of biscuits when these were sealed in airtight containers to last for months at a time. Hard track biscuits (earliest version of the biscotti and present-day crackers) were part of the staple diet of English and American sailors for many centuries. In fact, the countries which led this seafaring charge, such as those in Western Europe, are the ones where biscuits are most popular even today. Biscotti is said to have been a favorite of Christopher Columbus who discovered America! Making good biscuits is quite an art, and history bears testimony to that. During the 17th and 18th Centuries in Europe, baking was a carefully controlled profession, managed through a series of ââ¬Ëguildsââ¬â¢ or professional associations. To become a baker, one had to complete years of apprenticeship ââ¬â working through the ranks of apprentice, journeyman, and finally master baker. Not only this, the amount and quality of biscuits baked were also carefully monitored. The English, Scotch and Dutch immigrants originally brought the first cookies to the United States and they were called teacakes. They were often flavoured with nothing more than the finest butter, sometimes with the addition of a few drops of rose water. Cookies in America were also called by such names as ââ¬Å"jumblesâ⬠, ââ¬Å"plunketsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"cry babiesâ⬠. As technology improved during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, the price of sugar and flour dropped. Chemical leavening agents, such as baking soda, became available and a profusion of cookie recipes occurred. This led to the development of manufactured cookies. Interestingly, as time has passed and despite more varieties becoming available, the essential ingredients of biscuits havenââ¬â¢t changed ââ¬â like ââ¬Ësoftââ¬â¢ wheat flour (which contains less protein than the flour used to bake bread) sugar, and fats, such as butter and oil. Today, though they are known by different names the world over, people agree on one thing ââ¬â nothing beats the biscuit! Some interesting facts on the origin of other forms of biscuits: The recipe for oval shaped cookies (that are also known as boudoir biscuits, sponge biscuits, sponge fingers, Naples biscuits and Savoy biscuits) has changed little in 900 years and dates back to the house of Savoy in the 11th century France. Peter the Great of Russia seems to have enjoyed an oval-shaped cookie called ââ¬Å"lady fingersâ⬠when visiting Louis XV of France. The macaroon ââ¬â a small round cookie with crisp crust and a soft interior ââ¬â seems to have originated in an Italian monastery in 1792 during the French Revolution. SPRING-uhr-lee, have been traditional Christmas cookies in Austria and Bavaria for centuries. They are made from a simple egg, flour and sugar dough and are usually rectangular in shape. These cookies are made with a leavening agent called ammonium carbonate and baking ammonia. The inspiration for fortune cookies dates back to the 12th & 13th Centuries, when Chinese soldiers slipped rice paper messages into moon cakes to help co-ordinate their defense against, Mongolian invaders. .

Comparing and Contrasting Views of Emotion Regulation
Everyone regulates their emotions and some better than others. A majority of the time we do not even realize we are doing so because of a very powerful unconscious. Emotion regulation is a relatively new section of psychology because it has yet to be extensively researched. Such unexplored areas tend to be even a little fuzzy to even the most understanding of researchers. James J. Gross of Stanford University is one of the comparatively few researchers in this field and has written many psychologically recognized papers on different aspects of emotion regulation. A significant article about the ideas of emotion regulation that also states many conducted experiments is titled ââ¬Å"Emotion regulation: Affective, cognitive, and social consequences. â⬠Many of his articles and ideas closely relate to the ideas contained within Benedict Careyââ¬â¢s New York Times article entitled ââ¬Å"Mind-Polishing Tools for Your Fuse Box of Emotions. â⬠While these two articles by Gross and Carey both narrowly focus on a small portion of todayââ¬â¢s psychological knowledge, there is a sharp contrast in their views of the topic. Perhaps by preferences of the author or what may be lack of knowledge on the authorââ¬â¢s behalf, it is more than pure scientific evidence that produced such similar articles that differ on so many levels at the same time. Both written materials of course have an audience, but the audiences to which they appeal are entire opposites. Both authors tend to also have slightly differing views it seems but it is apparent in what they have written that they both coincide on the idea that poor emotion suppression plays its largest role in the social environment. However, even though suppression is a main focus for both, Careyââ¬â¢s article tends to drift towards seeing suppression in a mostly negative light. The New York Times, the source of Careyââ¬â¢s popular press article, is more directly aimed toward the general public with the intent of informing. Therefore, the emotion regulation article doesnââ¬â¢t assume the reader knows anything about the subject and so starts off by introducing the topic and slowly works its way further into topic while never really going too far into scientific depth. Instead of using made-up examples as Gross does which may not be relative to the general public, Carey chooses real-life examples that tend to be more connected to the everyday life of U. S. citizens as goes his opening sentence: ââ¬Å"The longing for President Obama to vent some fury at oil executives or bankers may run deeper than politicsâ⬠(Carey, 2010, para. 1). Such statements appear to be just an example, yet they also hold the authorââ¬â¢s view of the situation, especially in an opening sentence. Such views usually set the tone or attitude for the rest of the article. This is not so, however, in one of Grossââ¬â¢s first statements where his example in one that has no depth: ââ¬Å"Sometimes, emotions are triggered virtually automatically, such as when we recoil fearfully from a snakeâ⬠(Gross, 2002). The example he uses, as previously stated, is not one that every person reading his article may know or have experienced but it also effective and contradicts the popular press article because it is an example which holds no emotional value. By not using emotion to shape his example, it is evident that Gross is not trying to persuade the reader to one view in any way, but rather just tells the facts. These forms of expressions are typical of a scholarly or peer reviewed article but that doesnââ¬â¢t mean that Carey couldnââ¬â¢t use this form of fact telling to get his point across. Content with emotional backup is favored by a reader just wanting a general picture because it makes for a more interesting read which is obviously Careyââ¬â¢s type of audience and not Grossââ¬â¢s. As far as content of the articles is concerned, it seems that the social consequences of emotion suppression are the bigger picture and focus of them both. Research in the past few years has found that people develop a variety of psychological tools to manage what they express in social situations, and those techniques often become subconscious, affecting interactions in unintended waysâ⬠(Carey, 2010, para. 6). Obviously what emotions we portray in interactions with others will affect the reactions of the partner and your own. Letting these emotions flow, whether positive or negative, seems to be a great way to release weight off your shoulders, so to speak. On the other hand, how we let emotions flow and to what extent has a major impact on our relationships with others. Positive portrayal of emotions is always the key to keeping healthy interactions. Even if it is anger that you are showing, sometimes letting the other person know why you are angry allows both of you to work on a solution which in turn is a positive consequence. Suppression is found to also lessen the psychological experience of a situation and also negatively decrease memory abilities during that period of time (Gross, 2002). Introverts therefore, keeping their personal feelings secret, would not mentally feel as strongly about an exciting event as someone who would greatly express their joy or excitement. So it seems that in this case, the more you show youââ¬â¢re excited, the more excited you become. Suppression then can be seen as a downward spiral to levels of low satisfaction, also known as the snowball effect. Although biases in published articles are regularly avoided, sometimes an author will include their beliefs about the topic more than they intend to. Biases generally are not an in-your-face way of illustrating an authorââ¬â¢s view but rather a hidden and underlying focus that not only shows the authorââ¬â¢s preference but unknowingly slightly persuades a reader to agree with the writer. One way of biasing toward one train of thought is to only state that one opinion that the author has and not the opposing view. Thus it can be seen that Gross is not biased toward suppression only being a negative social consequence through sentences like: ââ¬Å"Compared to reappraisal, suppression leads individuals to share less of their positive and negative emotions, resulting in weakened social support, and even being less likedâ⬠(Gross, 2002). Being an author of a mainly research based article, Gross makes it clear that there is evidence that not only are there other forms of emotion regulation but different forms of suppression as well. In opposition to using other types of emotion regulation to further support evidence of suppressions consequences, Carey continues to use only examples of poor regulation to back up his conclusions. By mentioning that useful emotions are beneficial in certain settings, he veers away from going in depth about reappraisal because of how it might tone down his argument of how suppression is the main way that emotion regulation goes awry. Because Carey wrote this article in response to research and experiments about a scientific topic and not about social issues themselves, his bias is not a strong one or clearly apparent unless really evaluated as such. Largely due to less strict guidelines, popular press articles almost without fail are not just a write-up of facts but contain a viewpoint of some sort. This viewpoint not only shows the writers perspective but also generally allows the reader to decide for themselves what it is they choose to believe. Whether in light of the facts or in common beliefs, we can be sure that without a doubt emotion regulation controls all of our social interactions sometimes without us even noticing. However, Carey states that ââ¬Å"people may choose the emotions they feel far more often than they are aware ââ¬â and those choices, too, can trip up social interactionsâ⬠(Carey, 2010, para. 17). Emotions may clearly show our feelings but the correct way to do so remains quite imperfect. With new studies like those discussed in Grossââ¬â¢s ending address to researchers there is still much to be learned about how we as humans can positively impact our own lives in how we regulate our emotions. If we can learn as developing youngsters how to affect our social habits we may very well see a decline in mental and social disorders in society. There are valuable strategies for different situations, the only trouble is deciding which one is right (Carey, 2010, para. 26). Mastering our own actions and portrayal of emotions will not ever reach perfection. These actions and feelings are often dealt with unconsciously so it is impossible to completely control them yet if we do control all that we can the world may very well be a more accepting environment and impact our own and otherââ¬â¢s interactions for the better. Such hopes are more than likely the motivation for each of these authors to learn and write about the subject. Carey and Gross alike wrote for the greater good of informing about emotion regulation but their two articles were also not alike in so many ways. The context in which each author writes is ever so different for whom they are writing. More importantly though, the content the authors include paints a much bigger picture. Both articles focus on how poor emotion regulation has a huge consequence on our social lives. Their focuses differ however, because Carey focuses his article on how suppression is almost always a bad technique while Gross gives insight as to how there are different approaches of suppression and emotion regulation in general. To say the least, these two articles are comparatively alike in topic but contrast the divided views of the topic in whole, shedding new light on the future of emotion regulation.

An Example of Success In A Competitive Market Research Paper
An Example of Success In A Competitive Market - Research Paper Example In order for us to answer this question, it is imperative for us to have a clear knowledge about the challenges that face a firm in a competitive market. Things like competition, changes and ramification; these are the factors that stand as a challenge to any firm, new or old. Strategic plans and business techniques of different leaders and companies worldwide have been questioned due to the advent of the transformed competitive landscape. Changes in technology, the reorganization of industries due to internationalization as well as the growing environmental awareness recently are just some of the changes that need response to all firms. The ramification or complexity on the business operations occurred as a result of environmental concerns. Different industries, most especially the manufacturing industry, reformed their packaging, toxic waste management and greater drive for the recycling of materials. Solutions to these challenges are often quite simple and common sense. First, solutions would always start at the tail end of a determined problem. Because of the inevitable surge of technological revolution, coping up with the changing time is the best solution. There were revamping and restructuring of business models by the institution of new development in technologies in operations. Second, due to the technological advancements, dire political issues, and economic developments, it creates ramification within a certain market. Also, because of internationalization, the degree of communications and centralized operation has become more complex; hence, companies started to outsource their functions and the erection of relational allies that created virtual assembly. Lastly, as what I have mentioned, the market is overpopulated with firms of duplicating services incrementing the level of competition. Added to that is the entry of new markets in global setting, imposing a menace that cannot be discounted.
